Mexico’s aviation industry is raising concerns over proposed funding reductions included in the 2027 federal budget. Canaero and IATA have called on authorities to reconsider the measure, arguing that the country needs a well-funded aviation regulator with sufficient technical, operational and financial capacity. Under the proposal, funding for the “Efficient and Competitive Airports” category would total 1.11 billion pesos, a 75.7% real reduction from the amount authorized for 2026. AFAC itself would receive 175.4 million pesos, approximately 74% less.

AFAC responded that additional resources beyond those included in the initial 2027 Economic Package will be available. According to the agency, Mexico’s Finance Ministry will guarantee the resources necessary for regulation, supervision, oversight and actions aimed at strengthening operational safety. The debate comes shortly after the FAA conducted an IASA audit of Mexico’s aviation authority, whose results are relevant to the country’s Category 1 aviation safety status.

Mexico’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) is expected to operate without federal operating funds in 2027, according to the proposed 2027 Federal Expenditure Budget. The Finance Ministry did not request resources for the airport’s operations, as AIFA has surpassed its break-even point and is now generating commercial profits. The airport is projected to receive more than 2.2 billion pesos in revenue next year, along with an initial availability of more than 3.6 billion pesos.

AIFA reported net profits of 581 million pesos during the first half of 2026 and currently generates approximately 3.2 million pesos in daily profits. Its financial performance has been supported by passenger growth, cargo operations transferred from Mexico City’s main airport and improved ground connectivity. However, international expansion remains limited by restrictions affecting additional flights between Mexico and the United States.
